Our tamariki need a nutritional lunch at school, but just how much waste are you packing into their lunchbox?
Here are some simple tips to help you reduce lunchbox waste:
Use a bento lunchbox
Bento lunchboxes are split into different compartments so you can pack your child’s lunch without plastic wrap or sandwich bags. Some bento lunchboxes come with reusable containers for things like fruit, vegetables or yoghurt.
Ditch single-use products
Try using beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap or tin foil (both can’t be recycled). Some other great alternatives to single-use products are stainless-steel cutlery and reusable drink bottles.
Avoid individually wrapped items
Individually wrapped items like chips, cookies, fruit bars, single-serve yoghurts, juice boxes and juice pouches create a lot of unnecessary waste. Try making muesli bars and biscuits at home instead – they are yummier and just as cheap.
Buy in bulk
Buying items in bulk or larger packaging means less waste. The larger packaging can be left at home for reuse or recycling.
