The cleaning products hiding under our sinks make up a large amount of household waste. They are often highly toxic to people and the environment.

Making your own cleaning products is simple, will reduce your waste and helps to create a healthier home. Try out one of these tried and tested cleaning recipes:

Dishwasher Powder

1 cup washing soda (try your local bulk food store or supermarket for this)

1 cup baking soda

1/4 cup salt

1/4 cup citric acid

Mix all ingredients together. One Tbsp per load costs less than 5 cents!

Cleaning Paste

1 cup baking soda

1 Tbsp cream of tartar

10mls liquid castile soap

5mls water

In a bowl mix baking soda with cream of tartar. In a jug mix liquid soap with the water. Slowly pour into the powders and mix with a fork until you have a paste.

Add more water if you need to. Add 1 ml of eucalyptus oil and stir to combine. Store in an airtight container. Add more water if it dries out.

Laundry Powder

1 cup washing soda

1 cup baking soda

1 cup salt

1 cup borax (hardware stores stock this)

2 cups grated pure soap (eg. Lux Flakes)

10 drops lavender oil or eucalyptus oil

Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Lavender oil will help keep moths away.

Shower Cleaner

Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 water and 1/2 white vinegar.

Spray on shower doors or anywhere with soap scum.

Leave 5 minutes and wipe off.

General anti-germ spray

2 cups water

½ cup liquid castile soap

1 tsp essential oil

Mix in a spray bottle and use with a damp cloth.
